I came to Queens College in 2009 after obtaining my Associate's Degree in Elementary Ed. from LaGuardia Community College. I decided to go for teaching because I always knew I wanted to work with young children. During my senior year in high school I took a class called Teacher Cadet where students were able to explore teaching and were able to go to an elementary school close by to observe a class and teach a short lesson. I really enjoyed the experience and decided that teaching was my passion. My co-major is U.S. History. Because I'm from another country I never really thought about taking any U.S. History courses in college but I had two remarkable high school history teachers who truly put effort in their lessons and did their best so their students understood important events in history. I enjoy history very much and I hope that my students are able to enjoy it as well. Currently, I'm student teaching at P.S. 184 in Whitestone with 5th graders. I was a bit nervous about meeting them, but they seemed very well-behaved and very respectful to their teacher.
My first experience working with a group of children was my senior year of high school. The class was a kindergarten dual language class with a Spanish teacher that had come from Spain for two years to teach the class. The children were very loving and treated me as another teacher. I also worked as an after-school counselor for two years for the YMCA. My first year I had about 18 fourth and fifth graders and my second year I had second graders. I would help them do their homework for about 45 minutes and after that we would do arts and crafts, go to the gym, or learn something fun and educational. I've also worked with high school students for two summers. The program was called College Now and it was offered at LaGuardia to students that were interested in becoming teachers. I worked alongside a college professor and we taught them the foundations of education.
Some of my hobbies include listening to music, watching movies, spending time with my family, reading books, baking cookies and cakes, and traveling. Even though I don't play soccer I'm a big fan of FC Barcelona, a soccer club from Barcelona, Spain. I hope to travel there some day to see them play in their stadium. I'm pretty much obsessed with my team and the city of Barcelona due to its beauty and history. I watch soccer games from Spain, England, Germany, and Italy every weekend. My parents and siblings live in Virginia so once a month I travel down there to visit them. I enjoy family time because I don't see them often and I'm very family-oriented, but I try to stay close by calling them on a daily basis.
